My name is Akbar, I am a first-year student studying Mechanical Engineering at Queen Mary University Of London. From a young age I have always wandered on how anything would work. As a young boy whenever there would be a need of a car repair or any DIY required within the house, I would always help my dad and observe how he sorts out these dilemmas. I believe this is why I have such a strong connection with STEM subjects as it is always tackling these questions with ....... The trick to all questions that are STEM related subjects and I am sure you have heard this many times from your teachers; it is to practice, practice, practice! As practice makes perfect. It may be that you are finding it difficult to factorise by completing the square or how to find the momentum after the collision. Once understanding the equation, it is now time to implement. You may fail the first time, but this does not mean it is over, tackle it until you get it right; this is what makes one being from an average student to an A-A* student.
I have tutored KS3 and KS5 maths for the past two years to a wide range of students with differing abilities through family friends but most recently with MyTutor from February 2021 till June 2021. It was very satisfying to see the students with whom I worked with to increase in confidence which in turn increased their academic achievements. Over the course of these past two years, I have realised the importance of a clear lesson plan and objective to ensure maximum efficiency of the length of the session.
I have however only tutoring maths from KS3 to A-level however I am open to teaching all three sciences till GCSE having achieved grade 8 in Biology, 8 In Chemistry and 8 In Physics as well completing A levels in Chemistry (B), Maths (A) and Physics (B).
My approach is that for the introductory lesson I would give the student a wide range of questions, to understand the pupil’s strengths and weaknesses to determine the level they are working on. Following this the consequent lessons, I will be able to plan the pitch, examples and style of teaching needed to tailor my teaching to the students needs.
If I am given knowledge about the pupil by the pupil's teacher or guardian about what the pupil would like to cover in the session or what they are struggling with in school, I can then compliment my teaching to address those concerns. Even with this knowledge I would always make the first lesson varied to obtain a wider picture.
My ideology is to persevere to help students through concepts they might need the extra support on to seeing them gain confidence- something I have found extremely satisfying. I hope to utilise interactive and new teaching methods to ensure regardless of my students' abilities, they can thrive in my sessions.
