Miriam

An Oxford University graduate, I am an experienced tutor in English Language (including academic and business), Italian and Study Skills. I have worked for fifteen years teaching young people and adults in private and secondary schools, colleges and universities.

I hold an Honours degree from Oxford, an MA in TESOL from Leeds University, a PGCE from the Institute of Education and Italian language certificate (C2) from the University of Siena. I am a native English speaker and bilingual in Italian.

With a friendly and professional approach, I seek to help each student reach their full potential, improve their grades and gain confidence in their academic abilities. I assist students with a broad range of subject and general topics, including exam technique and revision, coursework and writing, study skills and critical thinking.

I prefer to tutor students at my home in York and can travel to areas near York for an extra charge. I have a flexible schedule during the daytime and at weekends, and am available evenings (Monday to Thursday). I also have an enhanced DBS check.

Tutoring Experience

English: I have been tutoring students in English Language for twelve years both in the UK and overseas. I am an examiner for igcse, Cambridge English and IELTS. I teach all levels of English to students from children to adults in all key skills, including writing. I am I also tutor for specific exams (IELTS, PET, KET and proficiency), for academic subjects and for business.

Italian: I tutor Italian at all levels from complete beginners to advanced, including for business, social and exam purposes. I am also an experienced GCSE and A level Italian tutor for the AQA specification.

Study Skills: I tutor students in key academic skills including critical thinking across a range of disciplines, assist with coursework and exam preparation. I work part-time in universities helping students individually and in small groups across a broad range of subjects including arts and sciences.

Tutoring Approach

Every one of us learns in a different way and at different speeds and so I take an individual approach to tutoring. It is important to know what level the student is at, their objectives and then to develop a programme together. I like to use materials that are of interest to the tutees and are accessible and interactive, including course books and authentic materials to ensure lessons are engaging and purposeful. I believe tutoring needs to encourage students, with sensitivity to a lack of confidence students may have in a given subject.

I aim to offer lessons which provide solid, structured preparation which are nonetheless stimulating and intellectually rewarding for a wide range of students. For exam purposes, in addition to covering syllabus material, I focus on key skills: for Italian and English language tuition, confidence and fluency as well as a solid grasp of the basic grammar; for academic English, argument construction and analysis across a range of subjects, and in the case of study skills, preparation, revision, exam techniques and others.
