I am a freelance interpreter/translator based in Glasgow, where I have been working for over a year. Speaking multiple languages, I have a deep understanding of language learning and acquisition. I am also very aware of how each and every one of us has different needs, problems and strengths when learning languages. I have a BA in French language and Francophone cultures from the University of Glasgow and I will be taking the second part of the DPSI (Diploma In Public Service Interpreting), which is the professional qualification for interpreters in the UK
I have previously tutored young children (primary age) in French and English while living in Finland. At university I supported other students with coursework and oral exam preparation. As an interpreter I have worked with young and vulnerable people and have great experience in the area of successful communication. When I was eleven, I myself also had a tutor in French, while living in France and having to learn the language quickly, as well as another later in Finland at the age of sixteen when learning Finnish. Having been a player on both sides I have a good understanding of the entire experience of tutoring.
I believe each person has great potential that often gets lost amongst the big classrooms that are the norm in schools today. I spend my first meeting listening to the student, speaking to them about what they like to study and what interests them. I believe that everybody loves to learn - they key is to find the method that suits the student personally. My approach to tutoring will depend greatly on the needs and personalities of each student. Generally there will be a lot of discussions and I will always expect the student to explain to me what they have learnt, as I strongly believe that you never really learn something, until you teach it to someone.
