I am a qualified and experienced teacher of English with 30 years experience in schools and colleges, as well as eight years of being a private tutor. I can offer support and expertise in 11-16 English Language or Literature studies, including key stage three, basic skills, GCSE and National 5s, as well as A level English Language, English Literature and Film Studies. I have also been a tutor with Explore Learning so am familiar with needs of children from 5 -19, and have done proof reading and tutoring with adult students. I have been doing private tutoring for about 8 years. I have a TEFL qualification and can also offer second language teaching. My teaching can be on line or in your own home, within a reasonable distance of Edinburgh EH16 where I currently live. I have two teenage children so am familiar with the obstacles to learning from a parent's perspective as well! Get in touch and we can see how I can help!

I focus on the student. My first free assessment is to work out what they are good at, where they might need more support and aim to build up confidence, enjoyment and engagement, with varied sessions including basic skills such as spelling and terminology, but also focussing on particular areas of concern in their work at school or college. My students have consistently improved their performance, often commenting that they did not really enjoy English until I began to work with them and improving by one to three grades on average. Sessions are interactive, including consolidation from previous sessions, internet and study guide resources and close redrafting of exam responses and activities. I always try to include a range of activities and use time productively, whilst building good relationships and trust, which will show results in performance and engagement.
