I am a qualified specialist in supporting students on the Autism Spectrum. I have a PGCE (Further and Higher Education) and an additional qualification in autism (PGCert). I am a parent of a child with Asperger's Syndrome. I work at a university as a specialist mentor for students with ASDs and have experience working with 'disabled' students in an FE college as a support tutor and as a teacher of English GCSE resits. I have a good working knowledge of dyslexia.
I am friendly and approachable and have a relaxed, informal approach. I'm told by my students that I understand them - which makes me very proud.
I have specialised in the field of autism for the last 11 years, both as a support tutor in FE and a specialist mentor to degree students. I have worked as a teacher in an FE college - teaching English GCSE resits with great success. It is a mentor that I feel that I have made the greatest difference to young people on the spectrum by assisting with emotional issues and study skills which have been barriers to their learning in the past.
I have taught lecturers how to work most effectively with people on the spectrum and have spoken at conferences on supporting people with ASDs.
Although academic success is important, I believe it is only when the young person feels safe and can understand the social and emotional context of learning, that they can achieve their potential.
Often the student will need to discuss issues which have upset them or confused them during the week before any academic progress can be made. Students often need support to understand their own feelings so that they can articulate their needs. The right study strategies are key for people on the spectrum and we can work together to find those that work best for your child across all their subjects.
