Personal Description:

***NOW OFFERING SUMMER BRIDGE PROGRAMMES FOR STUDENTS STARTING AS MATHS/PHYSICS SEPT 2016… BE PROACTIVE, COME AND JOIN IN :) *** (Kentish Town based)

Hi, I'm Michael. I achieved the highest maths A-level score nationally in 2002. I have a First Class Physics degree, a Physics PhD, and I'm a qualified teacher with a PGCE and QTS. I have offered 1-2-1 tuition services for over ten years, specialising in ensuring that students develop the academic clarity required for high exam performance. I use a variety of interactive methods to ensure that students have the required comprehension to both produce and understand high quality exam answers. I have specialist knowledge of the applied maths modules (i.e. S1/M1 etc), I enjoy the 1-2-1 format, and I have produced excellent results for a number of years now.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been providing tuition services since 2005 (I started tutoring during my PhD studies as the undergraduates who struggled would often seek me out to ask for help - at this point I started tutoring privately). I am currently teaching Physics, Maths, Statistics, and Further Maths (applied modules) to A-level I have experience of teaching abroad (Qatar), which helped to develop specialised communication/teaching techniques that are designed to cater for EAL students.

Tutoring Approach:

I strongly believe in offering the right amount of support (as in not too much/too little), and the right type also. Too much support (i.e. just answering questions for students) is often counter-productive, as students can become over-reliant on their tutor, who ultimately will not be present during exams! Having said this, my students clearly notice their progress, and are thus motivated to be proactive during sessions. There are various types of support, dependent upon on the individual student, ranging from passive advice to full on exam question breakdowns, and through years of practice I have learned to gauge how much/how often to offer input during sessions. This balance is crucial to the productivity of each session, but constantly changes as the students ability level increases/topics change etc. By actively practising this skill for many years, and checking students progress regularly, we achieve significant progress by tailoring sessions to match the students personal learning style. I have a professional but friendly rapport with students, and from feedback across a number of years I can say with confidence that they enjoy my methods.
