Personal Description:

I specialise in English, History and Maths, working for the most part with young people aged 18 and under. From A2 Level to 11+ English and the early stages of literacy and creative thought, I have a wealth of experience helping young people engage their own intelligence and curiosity. I studied BA History & Anthropology at the University of London, Goldsmiths College. I employed by both private clients and Local Education Authorities.

Tutoring Experience:

I work with high-achieving students to help them pass the 11+ English exam, Common Entrance and GCSE. I also have strong experience helping students master their written self-expression.

As a private tutor, I pride my ability to incorporate a wide range of sources and case-studies into my teaching. I believe young people need a chance to discuss politics, understand social issues and engage with learning in these terms, in order to enhance their grasp of literacy, self-expression and critical thought.

I also work for an agency which specialises in young people excluded from school. I was chosen for this role due to my ability to connect and make learning fun. Through this work, which is particularly challenging, I have helped students pass their GCSEs and learned how to teach in even the most difficult circumstances, including work with gang members and school refusers.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is person-centred. I believe the most important aspect of learning is the decision to learn. I therefore plan my lessons with students, allowing them to negotiate, to ensure they care about the work. Through this method, we are able to learn about surprising subjects together. I deliberately make my lessons fun, setting students rigorous tasks based on their creativity, curiosity and humour.

I have access to a huge database of teaching resources, and like to combine creative exercsises - storytelling, letter-writing, discussion - with a clear focus on goals and exam qualifications.

I believe it is important to remain accountable, and so I make a point of speaking to parents after each session, to explain what learning has taken place and show the work of my students.
