This is how 2 referees rated Michael:
I am a chartered chemist & scientist. I currently manage a testing laboratory at a company in Hull. I graduated from the University of York with my Masters degree in Chemistry in 2005 and with my PhD in 2010. When I'm not working I mostly enjoy spending time with my wife and two daughters or with my head in a good book, preferably of the science fiction/fantasy variety.
While working towards my PhD at the University of York, I regularly took part in laboratory demonstrating duties (briefing and debriefing, overseeing experiments, marking paperwork), and I also mentored an undergraduate student in their final year project on the synthesis of functionalised carbon nanotubes. I am currently an industrial supervisor for a 3rd year Chemistry student from the University of Hull who is completing her industrial year at the company I work for; this has involved teaching all of the laboratory experimental procedures as well as relevant company specific information on an ongoing basis, and assisting with University related duties and reports etc.
My approach to tutoring is to take it steady, step by step, in order to build on a firm understanding of basic concepts. I also try and relate the subject matter to real world applications if possible, as this can tend to spark interest quickly once abstract ideas are seen as reality. I treat each individual with a similar initial approach but cater for obvious strengths and weaknesses accordingly, with appropriate teaching methods.
