I am a qualified teacher and mathematics specialist, qualified to teach children with special educational needs.
I have always had a keen interest in meeting the needs of the individual child, tailoring my lessons to their exact requirements and seeing their self-confidence and esteem flourish as they come to understand and master areas of maths that previously daunted them - and seeing the positive impact this has on the rest of their school work.
Now a mum of a child experiencing specific learning difficulties and supporting both him and other pupils 1:1 with their mathematics, I am studying for a masters degree in psychology and also pursuing my interest in dyscalculia.
I am an experienced primary school teacher who has taken whole school responsibility for special educational needs provision.
As a special needs teacher I have worked throughout KS1 and KS2 teaching pupils on a 1:1 basis with pupils needing extra support with maths and literacy.
In my private teaching I have taught home educated children throughout the primary and middle years and KS1&2 school pupils needing extra support including those displaying learning problems typical of dyscalculia.
I have also taught basic numeracy to adults as well as delivered various IT training requirements for business purposes.
My teaching methods target truly understanding the basics before progressing with any more advanced maths. Having assessed each child I work initially, if necessary, on concept of number and place value. With all topics I look at strategies as well as formal processes, and progress through small, achievable steps, ensuring success. I have a range of excellent resources which help the visual and multi-sensory needs of so many learners.
I also enjoy teaching basic numeracy to adults and have helped demystify maths to adults of various ages who, though initially nervous and wary, gained considerable confidence as their understanding and number competence developed.
