This is how 2 referees rated Maya:
Outside teaching, my time is taken up by my family (including a large, hairy dog and two cats) and playing rugby. I am an energetic and optimistic person and hope that this comes through in my teaching.
I began teaching at university undergraduate level and was then offered the opportunity to work at an international school situated on the university campus. I have been module leader for A'level Economics there for several years as well as running a statistics course for graduates and lecturing on the Foundation Economics course.
I am an A'level Economics examiner for several exam boards, so I have a very clear idea of what is required of students in order to succeed in their exams. I have also set and marked exams within the international school and marked university exams and MA dissertations which gives me great insight into a variety of assessment processes.
I think a tutor has to be flexible, as the reasons for seeking extra tuition vary greatly. The benefit of one to one tuition is that it can be tailored to individual needs, but being a teacher and examiner also means I can construct a clear framework of study to guide a student towards exam success for the particular board they will be sitting rather than just ironing out difficulties as they arise.
It is important to help the student along with the A'level course that they are following rather than confusing them with material that may be outside their syllabus, though I think trying to inspire a bit of passion for the subject helps enormously with motivation to study the nuts and bolts of economics and I hope I do this to some degree.
