I am a nanny, audio transcriber and tutor, and I love the flexibility, variety and scope for meeting new people that these jobs provide. My belief is that everyone is born able to learn and discover, and everyone has value and something to offer the world. I am studying for a MSc in Child Welfare and Wellbeing, which is contributing to my understanding of cognitive development and how children learn, and is also very interesting!
I have tutored children aged from 5 to 16, in a range of subjects from English as a foreign language to GCSE Maths. Some of my students have been home educated, while others need additional support alongside their school work. I have worked with children attending schools in the British, American, French, and South Korean school systems, and with students who have specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia.
In 2018 I completed an Award in Education and Training, which enhanced my knowledge of lesson planning and different teaching strategies. This qualifies me to teach adults, and I have worked with a local A level Art department to introduce a tailored academic writing course for their students.
Currently I am tutoring two primary school children in phonics and reading, a home-educated boy in maths and study skills, and a child about to start secondary school, also in maths.
I believe that the most important thing anyone can learn is how to learn independently. My aim is to give my students the tools and the motivation to study for themselves, by inspiring a passion for knowledge and the confidence to learn new things.
Everyone is different and no two people learn in exactly the same way. I try to identify my student's strengths and build on these, tailoring my approach to suit their learning style. I draw on a range of resources, from videos and websites to books and worksheets, sometimes custom-made for my student. Events and special occasions can provide excellent starting points for learning more about a topic, and I'm always on the lookout for new ideas and tools to help me improve my tutoring.
