I am an experienced tutor (six years) specialising in National 5 and Higher English, primary and secondary level literacy, and academic writing skills. I currently have availability for National 5 and Higher English tuition from my home in Edinburgh on Wednesdays 4.30-5.30pm and 7.30-8.30pm. (Please note that this is my only availability.)
I am a PhD student in English Literature, researching early children's literature and childhood reading. I also have a Masters degree (with distinction) and a first class Honours degree in English Studies from the University of Stirling. I have studied education courses at undergraduate level and have worked as a voluntary classroom assistant in the English Department of a local secondary school.
I therefore have a good understanding of learning strategies and Curriculum for Excellence as well as the current secondary English and primary literacy curriculum. I have extensive tutoring experience in primary-level Literacy, secondary English (S1-S3), National 5 and Higher English. I also teach English Literature and Academic Writing Skills at university level.
I have a kind, patient and positive disposition and I look forward to working with you!
I have tutoring experience with both primary and secondary pupils, with a great deal of experience in tutoring Higher English. My time as a classroom assistant has given me a good insight into the English curriculum and I have particular experience of the transition stage from primary to secondary. It has also helped me to develop my teaching skills and I use a wide variety of approaches in tutoring so as best to meet the needs of individual students. I also ran creative writing workshops in a local secondary school and can offer tuition in all kinds of writing.
I have extensive experience in teaching study and academic writing skills both at school-level and in higher education. I am therefore well placed to help students improve these skills in advance of starting their university study.
While living in Austria I worked as an English language assistant in Vienna. This has given me a number of skills in teaching both English as a foreign language. I also offered private tuition in English to a 4th year student who was struggling with exam preparation. From this experience I gained a teaching position in a summer school in Edinburgh, teaching English to students aged between 10 and 18. I built a good rapport with all the students and had 100% exam success across my classes in the Trinity oral exams. I also have experience in teaching English as a foreign language and academic writing skills to university students as well as experience in proof reading long academic essays.
I believe that building trust and confidence is a vital part of the tutoring process and I achieve this through my patient and caring nature. I have an infectious passion for both literature and languages, and enjoy teaching these at all levels. I try to make lessons as fun and varied as possible.
Depending on the level, a first lesson in English tuition will usually involve some form of assessment, perhaps by looking over previous written work, working through worksheets as well as reading and spelling assessments. I will also chat with students and parents to gain a better understanding of your needs and expectations. I then draw up a plan for the coming weeks which I will share with you. With all subjects my main aim is to inspire a love for the subject and build confidence through positive and interesting lessons.
