Personal Description:

I am a friendly and easy going recent engineering graduate of Cambridge University. I'm currently undertaking a PhD at Oxford and would like to help those who were in my position a few years ago! I took a distinction (equivalent to a first) in my masters degree and I have won several awards and prizes whilst at university including the William Nixon Prize in Engineering (2013) and a College Senior Scholarship (2015).

Due to the inter-disciplinary nature of my degree, I have a flexible and broad knowledge of a range of subjects from electronics to mathematics. I'm currently working in AI, specialising in theoretical approaches to reinforcement learning.

Tutoring Experience:

I have had experience teaching undergraduates as part of my masters degree at university. I have also tutored several students now and conducted mock Oxbridge interviews.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that to succeed and to understand any subject, it is really important to enjoy it. Maths in particular is a very elegant subject, and one that requires creativity and analytical thinking in equal measure. Maths is also frequently seen as an intimidating subject. This may be due to a lack of confidence coupled with bad teaching and the stereotypes that surround doing maths. Maths really is nothing more than a way to express ideas precisely and concisely, and is something that should be accessible and enjoyable to everyone.

I was fortunate enough to have a maths teacher who was able to show me the beauty of the subject. My approach to tutoring was shaped by him, as a result, I aim to keep lessons as informal as possible, thereby focussing on the needs of each tutee whilst uncovering weaknesses in understanding. This is not possible when there is intimidation of any form.

I hope to leave tutees with a robust understanding of important principles, which will give them the flexibility to approach any new problem with confidence and fluency. This is the key to success in any exam, and more importantly, will allow the tutee to make connections between disparate seeming subjects.
