Hi! I'm Matt, and I'm studying Natural Sciences at Cambridge. I'm now in my second year and am studying Chemistry and Materials Science modules. In my first year I achieved a Class I. I have a passion for science and maths, especially Chemistry, as they can be used to explain everything that goes on around us. The "eureka" moment of finally understanding a concept or connection is one that I love, and one I hope to help my tutees discover. Outside of my subject, I enjoy football and tennis.
I love my subjects, and want to help others understand scientific concepts so that they can learn to love science too. Please get in touch if you want to find out more about me, my tutoring style or past experience.
Over a year of experience of tutoring A-Level and GCSE Maths and Sciences.
I have experience at tutoring from my time in Sixth Form; I voluntarily ran lunchtime drop-in sessions for GCSE chemistry students, where I helped with homework and any other questions that they had. I also assisted KS2 students with literacy and reading skills, which taught me patience and gave me a new perspective on learning.
Building up a rapport with my tutees was very rewarding, and meant that both the student and I could work to the best of our abilities. It is important that tutees feel comfortable throughout their sessions, and my roles as Head Boy at school and Student Union President at University show I can confidently converse with both younger students and peers.
I took A-Levels only last year, so have first-hand experience of exam pressure and stress. I’m always calm, friendly and upbeat, as I believe positivity is the best way to make a student want to improve their performance. When students have a problem, I ask them what they already know, give them a little more information and then help them get to the answer on their own. This is much more beneficial than spoon-feeding.
When I start tutoring a student, I’ll ask about their current attainment and we’ll set goals; some will be long-term (such as achieving a certain grade), whereas others will be shorter-term (understanding a particular concept, maybe). Every few sessions we’ll revisit these goals to discuss how they are going. Ticking off achievements ensures a student feels that they are making progress.
I like to tailor my sessions to each student: I’m happy to assist with homework, go over topics that were taught in class but not fully understood, or provide additional problems. For some subjects, I have diagrams or notes that I have prepared, which I use and the student will have full access to. Depending on the needs of the student and what they want out of our tutorials, I may set some work to be completed between sessions, which we can talk through once completed.
I understand what it’s like to be a student, and will tailor my tutorials to each student’s needs.
