My name is Matthew and I am the Director of Mathematics at a school which is in the top 10 schools for progress in the country, also the winner of Secondary School of the Year and previously worked in a department which achieved Mathematics Department of the Year.
I pride myself on building understanding in my students as this is the only way we can be sure that we are preparing them for whatever question the examiner may give them. Through the latest changes at GCSE and A-Level it is even more important that students understand problems and use many methods to tackle them.
I am currently an examiner for the exam board so I am fully aware of the changes they are making and the knowledge they expect the top students to know.
I have been teaching Mathematics for 9 years in two of the top performing schools in the country. Both of these schools Mathematics departments were in the top 1% in terms of progress of students and their results.
I am also part of the Teaching and Learning team at my current school and have been rated 'Outstanding' in my last 6 Performance Management observations along with an Ofsted observation. I teach students aged 11 to 18 Mathematics including Further Mathematics at A-Level and Additional Mathematics in Year 11.
To date I have taught 19 students who have gone on to Oxbridge, UCL or University of Chicago to study Mathematics or Engineering.
I have extremely high expectations of my students and expect my tutees to complete tasks for the following session. This is a vital part of improving their Mathematics ability and skills to approach the most demanding questions on the exam paper. Although I regard the exam result as my priority as a tutor, I also believe that if they build a love of Mathematics then they will push their targets to an even higher level.
