My name is Matthew Ashworth and I am currently in my fourth year of teaching. I graduated in 2011 from the University of Warwick with a 2:1 in Biomedical Sciences. I am a friendly and encouraging individual and have had huge success with tuition in past with both GCSE and IB tutees. I have been teaching A-level Chemistry for 2 years and have had great success with my previous tutees at all levels. I live in Colchester and am more than happy to travel (within reason). Being a teacher, I have at my disposal a host of useful resources, methods and material to give my tutees the best chance of achieving their potential and more.
I have taught KS3, KS4 and KS5 in secondary schools around essex for 3 years. I am very familiar with the science KS3 syllabus, OCR and AQA GCSE syllabus (for all the three sciences - although I personally have less experience in physics) and have taught OCR-A Chemistry for the past 2 years. This year I will start teaching IB Higher Chemistry and I have tutored IB higher Biology before. I passed my teaching qualification with an 'outstanding' grade. I attend multiple training sessions each year to make sure that I am up to date with all the latest changes to subjects, teaching those subjects and have also been an OCR examiner, so I am familiar with the other side of the examination process, too!
I am a very charismatic and encouraging tutor and like to run sessions like an interactive dialogue rather than a monotonous, one-directional conversation - in my experience this has a much greater impact for understanding and retention than the old fashioned 'chalk and talk' model. I like to set homework, although this is more enrichment work rather than rigorous assessment, although we will sit past papers to develop exam technique (in my experience, this is usually half the battle!). I am very flexible when it comes to arranging appointments or rearranging appointments as long as they are within the allocated hours and enough notice is given.
