Hi, I'm Matt. Thanks for taking the time to read my profile.
I have recently finished a PhD in Biology at the university of Bristol, before which I studied Natural Sciences at the university of Cambridge.
Although science has always interested me, I have a brilliant secondary school biology teacher to blame for my choice of favourite subject. The most important lesson I learnt is that being taught with a little enthusiasm can make a big difference!
I've also been lucky enough to do my own scientific research, and to have the chance to talk about it with lots of different people. This has reinforced just how fascinating life is, and that biology deserves to be learnt and understood. I firmly believe that education is vitally important and I hope I can use my passion for chemistry and biology to help you achieve your goals.
I have a mixture of teaching experience, having tutored at A-level for 1-2 years and also having taught undergraduate students.
Everyone learns differently and most people know how they learn best, so I like to be flexible with how I teach.
However, I do think that understanding is key. By trying to fully understand a topic, the learning process becomes much easier. Personally I think one of the best ways to improve your knowledge of something is to try to explain it to someone else, so I like to have plenty of discussion.
Linking different ideas and topics together is also a useful learning tool - memory works best by forming lots of connections.
Exam technique is just as important as knowledge, but is often overlooked at school. I like to dedicate time to learning how to approach questions. They may not be fun, but past papers and practice questions are essential to exam success.
I prefer to agree a topic beforehand and spend approximately the first 30-40 mins working through it and teasing out the crucial information. Then we can move on to testing your knowledge, by explaining to me and/or with some practice questions.
