I am 50 years old, living in South Lakes. I enjoy training for triathlons, especially the outdoor swimming! I spend a lot of time climbing and bouldering as well. I am currently tutoring and am a trustee for a local primary school.
It has been and continues to be a joy and a privilege bringing up my two children. It has taught me a lot about myself and my priorities but more importantly, it has taught me how each individual is uniquely special and needs distinctly different attention.
I have been teaching since 1991. My first mathematics teaching post was in Zimbabwe in a small village school called Chakohwa Secondary School. This taught me how to teach with action and little English as their mother tongue was Shona.
Since then I have spent most of my working life teaching primary and secondary school age pupils outdoor activities and mathematics. On the maths front in the last decade, I have taught at Kirkby Kendal, The Lakes School in Troutbeck, Ulverston Victoria High School and Our Lady's Catholic College in Lancaster.
I use the first lesson to learn about the tutee so that I can link the learning onto what they already know and understand and link it with what is real in their life and how they like to learn. After identifying what the objective is (up and coming exam, confidence, or specific concepts) an appropriate framework of study is outlined giving the study programme a momentum with achievable outcomes on the way.
