I love teaching and helping students develop their particular skills and interests. It is always good to see people on their way to achieving their goals and enjoying their work. My special passions are reading and writing, drama and media. I have written, and been involved in, the production of award-winning audio study guides for public exam. students in the UK and abroad. Because of other commitments, I have recently been off-line, but now have a few slots to offer again.
I have wide experience in Independent and State (Selective and Comprehensive) schools and of one-to-one work with tutees at all stages, from young people negotiating the educational system to adults returning to study. I concentrate on public exam work in English Literature at A/L and university leveI, regularly teach the syllabuses of all the exam boards in England and am an experienced Examiner. I don't offer tuition below Year 10. Most of my work comes from the recommendations of past tutees and parents and I have many references available. A few recent comments have been:
Thank you for all the help you gave Sarah. We are absolutely delighted with her result!
Without you, I wouldn't have got my A*. You changed the way I write and think and that has had a good effect on my other subjects too.
Not only have I learnt a lot this year, I've really enjoyed our sessions.
Thank you for your patience, warmth and encouraging, supportive approach to teaching.
With your help, I felt confident about organising and writing essays in the exam instead of panicking.
My approach is friendly and sympathetic but focused, keeping the demands of the student's course in mind. Besides working on specific assignments and building understanding through discussion, students need the opportunity to ask questions, revisit points and clarify their thoughts. I know that the demands of large teaching groups and tight time restrictions make this difficult to achieve all the time for everyone in school, so I am flexible about the pace and direction of study, matching it to the individual. Tuition is a supplement to, not a substitute for, school or college teaching and so can offer broader knowledge and understanding of topics. When appropriate, looking at texts in their literary context, beyond syllabus confines, is invaluable, especially for students aiming at the highest grades. Whether students need general guidance with texts or specific concentration on exam technique, all work is more enjoyable and progress easier when problem areas are smoothed!.
