I am a professionally qualified, experienced, successful and independent private tutor in Maths & Engineering topics ('A' Level and above); and am also fully accredited as a Chartered Engineer, Chartered Scientist, Member of the Institute of Physics, & a former Member of the Tutors Association
Originally from Canterbury in Kent, I have lived near Holsworthy (mid-Devon) since 2002.
I am enthusiastic about all matters connected with Maths & Engineering, and enjoy passing on that enjoyment and enthusiasm to students in the form of exam skills and performance.
All my tuition is supported by the use of Mathcad Pro7 - an excellent interactive mathematical computer package.
I hold full and current DBS accreditation, and many personal and professional references are also available if required.
With over 20 years experience in providing private home tuition in Maths and Engineering, records show that the vast majority of students with whom I have worked have either comfortably achieved, or surpassed, their targetted or required grades.
Since 2006, I have also been designing and delivering Maths Revision Workshops to small groups of 'A' Level students.
I have established close working links with many local schools and colleges (particularly Shebbear College and Launceston College); and have previously worked for the Open University in a tutoring and mentoring capacity.
My aim in private tuition is to work “one-to-one” with a Student in order to empower him/her with higher levels of skill & confidence in the agreed topic(s).
However, for such tuition to be successful, it is essential that the Student has the fundamental desire to learn for, without such a desire (and associated commitment) the sessions will become frustrating for all concerned –and will result in little or no progress being made.
Of equal importance is the need for encouragement and support from the Student’s parents or guardian.
Confidentiality is maintained at all times. I do not discuss any individual Student’s work, progress or participation in the tuition process with anyone except the Student and his/her parents or guardian.
The subject matter is discussed and agreed with the Student (and parents/guardian if possible), and is designed to complement any syllabus topics that are being studied by the Student elsewhere, eg at school/college.
Particular emphasis is placed on any topic(s) of the syllabus that the student is finding difficult. The opportunity is taken to explain the topic from all angles, using practical examples of application if at all possible.
At all times, I treat the Student as an adult; a Student is never talked down to or patronised.
I encourage the Student to ask questions, to challenge, and discuss the subject matter at all times.
By mutual agreement, I can set additional work for the Student to tackle at home on his/her own, which should then be presented to me at the next session for any relevant marking, comments and feedback.
All my feedback on homework is constructive, and assists in the overall learning process.
If, whilst tackling either their school work or my homework, the Student needs further assistance, he/she may telephone (or visit) me for appropriate help and guidance. There is no extra charge for reasonable amounts of additional support. (please note that, on no account, do I do Student's homework for them !!!)
Any work set to be completed at home should be laid out as if it were part of an answer to an examination question; ie it should be neat, logical, and show all appropriate working. In other words, the Student should be attempting to gain the maximum marks available.
I consider an important part of my work is to prepare a Student for an exam (ie review exam techniques).
Last, but not least, it is my intention that all the work should be enjoyable, relevant, stimulating and rewarding.
