Personal Description:

During my undergraduate I studied Philosophy across the University of London, and focussed a great deal of attention on Ancient Greek Philosophy and the History of Modern Philosophy. At postgraduate level I studied Political Theory at University College London. This included detailed study of ethics, political obligation and justice. Outside of the academy I have always read a lot of history - which was a close second to philosophy when choosing which academic course to follow - and fiction of various sorts.

The way I tutor is informed by my academic interests and from my own experience of academic environments. As a result, making sure tutoring is accessible to everyone regardless of income is very important to me. Therefore, though I have stated fixed prices for the tutoring sessions, there is a reduced rate for low income families and students. Please ask me about this if you need to!

Tutoring Experience:

Facilitated philosophy sessions in secondary schools.

One to one tutoring experience with peers at university.

Tutoring Approach:

When tutoring, I try to emphasise a collaborative and non-hierarchical approach to learning that is rooted in the fundamentals of philosophical method.

Part of the reason for this is that this style of tutoring is a highly effective way of enabling the student to obtain and retain the thinking skills to continue learning under their own direction. For example, if the student is struggling with something, I will attempt to help them find their own way through the difficulty with careful questioning of what they think about the subject at hand. Though of course there are often 'right answers' (for their exams and essays, etc), and to reach these I will occasionally take the lead more overtly to sign post them to those answers, some times this method will also acknowledge that perhaps there aren't always easy answers to things.

Furthermore, however, tutoring in this way is an acknowledgement that academic work is often not an easy or accessible thing to do, or world to be in. As such, though this method also helps high achieving students to flourish, it is an excellent way of helping and valuing students to whom academic work does not come so easily, who would not necessarily find a tutor suited to them, or who do not always feel that their contributions are welcome in more formal environments (at school, for instance). This also means that I will as far as I can adapt my tutoring style to the preferred learning style of the student - both academically and in how we interact - ensuring that they feel as comfortable and able to learn as possible. Basically, as far as possible I begin where the student already is, and help them from there.
