Personal Description:

My wife and I have been married for 18 years, both of us having grown up within a stone's throw of our current abode in Marlow. We have two children, attending Sir William Borlase and Great Marlow.

I have worked in Software Development for 25+ years with mathematics being a fundamental aspect of my work. Mathematics has been a major part of my life and could sadly be described as my main hobby ! It's when the children studied mathematics at school that I discovered a penchant for not just studying mathematics but also for tutoring. It's something that has paid off handsomely with the results they've achieved … not that I'm taking all the credit !

Tutoring Experience:

I've been told that "patience is my virtue", whether it be when training Software Developers at work, clients on Software, or children and adults in mathematical concepts.

I've also been told that I have a way of explaining something in a language the student understands i.e. if need be I'll return to basic mathematical principles to help explain a problem.

UPDATE 10-Dec-17:
I have a full schedule but am available Saturdays at 10:00

Tutoring Approach:

The ultimate aim is for the student to gain the knowledge to allow them to approach their final exam(s) or homework with the greatest of confidence. Once that's in place, getting the grades will be a formality.

That confidence is built up primarily by working with past exam papers and making sure the student can firstly understand 1. what the question is asking and 2. how exactly to answer it. Any short comings the student has can be easily identified and it doesn't take long to fill the gaps of knowledge that prevented the student from completing the questions.

However, sometimes working through questions isn't the best way and the basics, or laws, of mathematics have to be revisited. The interesting thing here is that, as students mature, they start to grasp those mathematical concepts and laws that previously would have confused them. So what seemed a difficult concept just a year ago actually isn't that tricky to understand if explained again.

I prefer to tutor in the students home. It is, after all, an environment the student's familiar and comfortable with. The fact that my wife, children, dog and cat are noisy creatures around my house of course has nothing to do with that ;-)
