! used to teach in a small village school where I taught the whole of Key Stage Two together! This allowed me to develop my expertise as well as enhance my understanding of the curriculum and the progression of skills required in order to teach numeracy and literacy efficiently and successfully to children aged 7 - 11 years. I like to help children improve their confidence and attitude to learning, and to realise that learning can be fun and absorbing, in order for them to achieve their potential. As for myself, I have a great love of the outdoors and in 2014 I undertook a solo trek across Iceland. Since then I have written and published a book about my sub-arctic exploits.
I have tutored children of primary age since retiring in 2013. I am able to prepare children for Sats, 11+, entrance exams or quite simply to develop within them a love of learning or maximisation of their potential. Over 30 years as a primary teacher in Lancashire, I have taught KS1 and KS2. I have held senior management roles including Acting Headteacher 1999-2000. I have held co-ordination roles for Maths, Literacy, Science, Design and Technology and ICT. I have plenty of experience teaching SEN. I ran an after-school Maths class for 4 years. My last Ofsted was regarded as outstanding in 2013 and I received an award for being one of three inspirational teachers of the year in Lancashire. I was a teacher governor for over 20 years.
The key to good tutoring is the partnership that is built between pupil and student and the relationship of trust and respect that exists between parents/carers. I am very thorough in my approach and work to guidelines as laid out in the National Curriculum. Tutoring can be quite intensive so I like to develop an informal, friendly but purposeful style. Assessment is key to ascertaining weaknesses and gaps in understanding and I use this to indicate the way forward. I believe practice and reinforcement is important to ensure newly learned concepts are retained, however pace of learning is essential too.
