Personal Description:

I am a 26 year old mathematician, programmer and graphic designer currently working on a PhD in computer science and mechanical engineering at University College London, which focusses on the design of shape-morphing smart materials for use in assistive technology. Prior to that I earned an MMath degree at the University of Surrey and was an industrial research intern at Pfizer, where I developed mathematical models to better understand the Hepatitis C Virus. I have served as a communicator and consultant for the European Commission and the BBC, where I provided research for The Longitude Prize (and the accompanying Horizon documentary) and went on air to talk about 3D printing for an episode of BBC World Service's Science in Action (2015). I gave a talk about my research to an audience of over 1,000 people at TEDxUCL 2015, which is available to view on Youtube. Outside of my research I am a software developer for Bodymetrics, and design paint-schemes for private aircraft through RAS Completions. I've played guitar and piano since a very young age and regularly perform in public.

Tutoring Experience:

For the past three years I have taught UCL's masters course (providing tutorials to over 50 students per year) in product design, invention and prototyping, where I teach the students a number of programming languages and problem solving techniques as well as physical elements such as electronics and mechanics alongside market research and business models. Prior to this I was a module tutor in computer programming to first year undergraduates at the University of Surrey (the only undergraduate to ever do so) and throughout my adult life have provided private tuition in mathematics, economics, graphic design, guitar and piano. My music students have all achieved merits or distinctions in ABRSM and Trinity exams up to Grade 6. I regularly go into secondary schools and lecture on the exciting real world applications of the mathematics and science they cover in their lessons, and often receive emails from the schools and students thanking me for the inspiration!

Tutoring Approach:

I firmly believe that anybody is capable of learning - and enjoying to learn - absolutely anything, provided they can understand why it is important and have a knowledgeable tutor to steer them along the most efficient and correct path. When teaching I always draw upon the experiences of my research career to provide context to the theory being learned; a technique that helps the students to not only become proficient in the material but also leaves them with a greater desire to incorporate the ideas into their everyday lives and future plans. As a communicator I have developed a skill for rephrasing complex subjects into more relatable terms, and enjoy the challenge of breaking things down and describing them in multiple ways until it's clear the student understands as thoroughly as I do (or at whichever level they are comfortable with).
