Salisbury Tutor

Having attended Downside School, near Bath and spent my entire teaching career as head of either a Geography or History department in the private prep school system, both in the UK and overseas, I have recently completed my career having completed over twenty years as Head of Geography at Chafyn Grove in Salisbury, where I served as Housemaster and and as senior coach to the main boys's games: rugby, hockey and cricket. Having retired this year, it is now my intention to put that combined experience and know-how in the service of a wider local community within the Salisbury. Flexibility to meet demand is the key, so travelling to a tutee or meeting them at home is not a problem. Equally, my experience and ability to offer two subjects provides an attractive package.

Tutoring Experience

Since qualification (Honours degree in History and PGCE via Reading University), I have spent forty years honing technique, acquiring knowledge and enabling students to achieve consistent success either as Head of History or Head of Geography in prestigious prep schools, latterly at Chafyn Grove in Salisbury. I have consistently prepared pupils up to Common Entrance and Scholarship level, which provides the groundwork for GCSE preparation. INSET training and attendance at courses have enabled one to adjust one's approach and keep abreast of developments, changes to the syllabus and alterations of emphasis.

Tutoring Approach

My approach is via an initial assessment of analysis of strengths and relative weaknesses and a subsequent focus upon the syllabus areas needed to be shored up. This is achieved vis the use of practice papers to hone exam technique, the use of online revision tools, a bank of directly relevant powerpoint presentations produced by myself over an entire career and an entire set of "Quizlet" online quizzes designed by myself which provide and easily accessible and enjoyable tool for reinforcement of the syllabus area being studied. Ultimately, any learning experience must be enjoyable to be effective, and my experience has taught me that a combination of these focused techniques attuned to the ability level of the tutee, brings its own rewards.
