Personal Description:

I am the author of 'Albert and Flora' and ´Those Forest Men´. I am an examiner in English Literature with two different exam boards - Edexcel and WJEC - and have examined for the last eight years. I have tutored all levels from Year 6 to PGCE. For the last two years I have examined IGCSE English Language, marking scripts from all over the world. I have taught all exam boards -AQA, OCR, WJEC, Edexcel and CCEA - over the last three years.

I am delighted to report that last year 100% of my students achieved their target grades. One got an E for his AS level English Literature (AQA) then with my help got an A for his A2. I have similar success stories at GCSE which I have been teaching since they scrapped O levels. I am also old enough to have taught O level English.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been an English teacher in UK High Schools for 26 years. I was a Head of English for 20 years. Head of Media Studies at Benjamin Britten High from 1990 to 1996, Head of English at Caister High from 1996 to 2000 and Senior Teacher at Cromer High School from 2000 to 2006. I then went on to write two books before working at New Eccles Hall School, dealing with autistic and dyslexic students. I have always been able to work with both the most able and the least able. Creating the right level of challenge is important.
I have taught English lessons in private schools in Moscow and Shanghai.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe you learn best when you enjoy your learning. Being an examiner gives me an insight into exactly what is required to take a student through the exam process. The earlier you involve me in the process, the more likely your student will achieve the highest grades.
Over the last three years I have tended to specialise in a number of areas. I have done a lot of work on exam technique at GCSE and have had some success with students retaking their English GCSE attempting to achieve a C grade. I have worked with aspergic students on a combination of academic and social skills. I have also helped students studying A level English, both language and literature. I have had input into writing UCAS forms and helped one student gain a place on a PGCE course. I have also proof read dissertations. I have had some success with muslim boys.
