Hi there. I'm Mariann, I'm 22 and I'm a recent life sciences graduate from the University of Glasgow. I have a first class honours degree in Anatomy so my area of expertise is human biology. However throughout my time at university I took a variety of classes including forensic anatomy, nutrition, neuroscience, physiology, genetics and chemistry. I am currently working as a demonstrator in the anatomy department at The University of Glasgow where I work alongside teaching staff in classes for undergraduate students of anatomy, medicine and dentistry.
I am a hard worker with a passion for learning. On completing secondary school I received the Award for Academic Excellence and when I graduated from university this year I was presented with the Craig McWhirter Prize for Anatomy. This is something I am very proud of. In 3 words I would describe myself as friendly, patient and understanding and I think these are essential qualities for a good teacher.
For my dissertation last year I carried out an outreach project at a local primary school where I taught students aged 6-11 about the human body, primarily through scientific games and experiments. It was very successful and I received a lot of positive feedback from both the students and teachers. I also have experience working with nursery school children through the High Five for Fruit project ran by North Lanarkshire Community Food and Health. In addition, I was a peer tutor for students with dyslexia when I was at secondary school and also volunteered weekly in a maths class at a secondary school for children with additional learning needs.
I am currently a demonstrator for The University of Glasgow Anatomy Department. This means that I am working in classes and labs with university teaching staff to aid student understanding of anatomy. I am currently working with 1st-3rd year anatomy, medicine and dentistry students in dissection labs and several other anatomy classes.
I am the first person in my family to go to university and I believe that all students are able to achieve great results regardless of whether they are from an academic background or not. I relied a lot on tutors throughout my time in education and they have had a huge positive impact on my achievements, so I would like to give back through tutoring myself.
I am a huge advocate for active learning so I try to use fun and interactive methods of teaching where possible. I feel that this allows for much more effective knowledge retention. From working with different groups of students I feel that I am able to gauge the ability of students well and work at an appropriate level with them. I will work with students in an encouraging and patient manner to bring out the best in them.
I offer a discounted first lesson to establish specific areas where the student is struggling most and to find out what the they would like to gain from the sessions. This session will last approximately 30 minutes.
I specialise in tutoring Higher Human Biology, National 4 Biology and National 5 Biology.
