Having graduated from the University of Lancaster in the early 80s with a BA and MA in English Literature I undertook a variety of jobs until I settled on teaching in 1988. I am married with a son of 20 and an 18
year old daughter so have plenty of experience of teenagers both at home and at school! It goes without saying that my greatest love is reading although I am also keen on film (and have taught A level Film Studies in the last 5 years). I am keen on cooking with a particular fondness for baking and have often taught with a plate of cakes in the classroom-something which particularly seems to encourage sixth-formers to greater efforts. Having spent 18 years living on the Isle of Wight, we have recently re-located to the Canterbury area. Being from Kent originally, I am enjoying being back in the county. I have my own car and am willing to travel to a student's own home if it is within a 5/6 mile radius of my home.
From 1988-1994 I taught at Rainham School for Girls in Rainham, Kent. This is a large non-selective state school. I then moved to Cowes High School on the Isle of Wight from 1994-1996 as second in department before leaving to have my son. For the next few years I stayed at home to care for him and subsequently, my daughter. During this time, I undertook private tuition as well as being an A Level examiner for AQA. From 2002-2012 I taught English (and Media/Film Studies) at Ryde School. an independent co-ed school on the Isle of Wight. I am experienced at KS3 as well as having a high success rate at GCSE and A-level. I have taught all abilties, from those who aspire to Oxbridge to those with specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia and Asperger's. I am currently an A level examiner with WJEC. I have now taken early retirement from full time teaching so am free to concentrate on tuition.
I have always set very high standards of all students I teach regardless of ability. Anything less than the best a child can do is unacceptable and I endeavour to provide each child with both the techniques and the confidence to achieve just that. It is really important to have as much fun as possible along the way and I try to make lessons fun and stimulating; my theory is that if I am bored then my students will be even more so so humour is at the heart of much of what I do.
