Information About Manuel - Forest Hill tutor
I am a pianist and a composer of contemporary classical music currently pursuing a Phd diploma at the King´s College of London. My music has been performed in Mexico, England, New York, Greece and The Netherlands. My work as a composer and researcher is centred on the relationship of music with other verbal arts like narrative or rhetorics and on the influence of poetry and literary techniques into the formulation of a musical discourse.
I have experience in teaching in classrooms and privately for around 8 years, specializing in composition, music theory, classical music analysis, piano and improvisation. During this time I have worked with students of very different backgrounds, ages, skills and interest and I have learned that the best way to get positive results is by finding the ways to make the students enjoy and feel passionate about music from the first moment; and to develop their own creativity, while building the necessary combination of knowledge, and skills in a natural and gratifying way. Throughout my career as a teacher I have created my own schemes and methods (based mainly in the employment of improvisation and composition as pedagogic tools) and I can say with confidence that all of my students, regardless of their particular ultimate goals when studying music, had made of it an integral part of their lives and a source of joy and personal enrichment.
Since my undergraduate studies I have been keenly interested in developing my knowledge and skills as an educator; I attended music pedagogy courses and gained teaching experience by working as a teaching assistant as a senior. During my master studies I researched on the psychology of creativity and the creative process and developed ways to implement my findings in a practical way as a composer and as an educator. I think that this work differences me from other tutors and teachers in the sense that I am able to provide an integral insight on aspects of the creative work that are sometimes taken for granted while training students in the technical or theoretical facets of music, and because it has helped me to design lessons, activities and exercises accordingly to my students needs.
