Hi there! I'm Manuel, and I'm here to help you learn History and Spanish!
I'm a Historian with a First Class BA and a First Class MA in History and Manuscript Studies. I'm an organised, friendly and supportive teacher, and I aim to make my students develop their skills rather than just their knowledge. I submitted my PhD in Manuscript Studies very recently at King's College London, and I expect my examination to take place in September.
I'm based in North London (Archway/Highgate area) but could travel to Central London. I can teach in person and/or online.
I have taught university entry-level seminars (small groups) on Medieval European History and 20th century History at King's College London for the past three years. Additionally, I have tutored students in Spanish (in Spain) for their A-Levels.
A great part of my teaching at university level has revolved around study skills and exam preparation. How to approach a new topic, how to write an essay and how to deal with exam anxiety are but some of the aspects of studying I have taught successfully through my seminars.
My approach to teaching is based around skills building. In History, these skills are reading comprehension and analysis, summarising information, establishing relationships between different periods and historical characters and processes. In Spanish, reading comprehension and the ability to successfully apply content to day-to-day situations.
In order to achieve the above, I like to provide general context and guidance on a particular historical period (or grammatical point in Spanish), and then work with primary sources in order to develop comprehension and to have a more hands-on approach to the subject. This also makes it more challenging and enjoyable!
Whilst I'll closely follow the syllabus, I am particularly interested in your individual needs and interests. This is even more so for adult learners.
