As a qualified teacher for KS1 and KS2 I get great pleasure from seeing young people learning and enjoying learning. I have entered the world of education after a background of former employment within the entertainment, transportation and retail sectors. I believe this has given me a greater understanding of the workings of the world to bring to teaching, and a realistic idea of the usefulness (or not) of what is taught. My continued involvement with children through various after school clubs during this time led me to eventually train as a teacher.
I am now in my seventh year of teaching and am currently working as a supply teacher across West Essex and several London Boroughs. I have been tutoring children across the primary age either to boost or extend them for their SATS, and to enable some to overcome areas that they have struggled with. I have tutored children to help them sit both the 7plus and 11plus entrance exams for local public schools. However I take no responsibility for the outcome of these as it is getting increasingly tougher to gain places which can have substantial numbers of children applying for them. I am fully conversant with the new Primary National Curriculum and the requirements to achieve the new Standard 2 and Standard 6 at the end of each Key Stage.
My teaching experience means that I can take a child back to an earlier stage to identify where they may have come unstuck but moved forward anyway whilst not completely understanding a concept or rule. I can then spend time correcting the problem so allowing the child to move forward again but this time with a solid foundation. My maths lessons use games and practical activities to ensure children's engagement as I believe that children should truly grasp the concrete basis to what they are learning e.g. I will get them to create 'arrays' for multiplication practically so they can see the answer as well as just know through rote. If you have easy access to a laptop and the internet it is also possible to use particular online teaching websites for some areas. With reading I have experience of the KRM psychological teaching method and the Government's Letters and Sounds Scheme and use a variety of written, practical, game and online activities as well as shared and guided readings. I believe in stretching children with their writing and use VCOP (Vocabulary Connectives Openers Punctuation) targets to extend them alongside different and differentiated writing tasks. I also have a strong sense of the need for correct grammar to be taught, understood and used. As a class teacher I have seen the immense benefit that reading a wide range of stories to children can bring to potentially enhance their own reading and writing. To this end I read and discuss, children's versions of Shakespeare, Roald Dahl, David Waliams and Spike Milligan (for poetry and rhyme) as a means of expanding a child's mind to the limitless creative ideas that may lie within. I use a combination of Bond, CGP and mainline teaching books when tutoring.
