Personal Description:

Hello, I'm Madi.
I'm an Oxford English graduate, actor and award-winning spoken word artist.

My speciality is in English language & literature in all its forms: how words and form convey meaning, emotion, historical context; understanding and developing creative writing; dramatic writing in plays, monologues and experimental texts; and how language is used in the media.
These disciplines relate closely with many other arts subjects such as History or philosophy, where the key to success is in the combination of two things:
a) the quality of the thinking, intellectual and critical rigour
b) strong essay technique: a clear argument, structure, judicial use of sources and criticism.

My personal writing credits are as follows:
I won the Roundhouse Poetry Slam 2016 and was a finalist in the UK National Slam Finals at the Royal Albert Hall.
I've performed my poetry for BBC iPlayer, BBC One, Soho Theatre and am currently appearing on Nationwide's current TV campaign for ITV Documentaries.
As a performer I also offer coaching in audition technique, presentation skills, and interview preparation.
Being able to be relaxed, confident, articulate and - above all - personable under pressure are invaluable.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been working with children and young people since 2012, and been running workshops on creative writing for just over a year.
I volunteered extensively for the charity Kids Company during their summer camps and as a primary school workshop assistant from 2012. Working with some of the most disadvantaged children in London, often with complex behavioural challenges, developed my passion for teaching and taught me clarity and patience.
I now run weekly cookery classes for primary school children in London.
As a spoken word artist I run workshops for teenagers, students and adults - most recently for The Family School (for children excluded from mainstream education), and Southampton Solent University.
In March I will be delivering my first poetry workshop in a prison.
I enjoy teaching students about performance skills, poetry and the history of spoken word but am particularly keen to share my academic knowledge alongside these skills.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is that if you are fundamentally engaged, passionate, and really able to get to grips with your subject then the technical requirements of passing the exam should come naturally.
I teach by firstly assessing precisely which objectives and examples need to be hit, making sure the student is clear about those and developing strategies to deploy these in an exam (such as mnemonics, quotes in batches of 3 etc), and then getting on with generating interest and passion in the subject.
How can we make this subject more relatable and engaging for YOU?
As a writer myself, I use my performance background frequently as a way of exploring alternative perspectives on topics which can be enlightening - why might you, as a writer, choose this word rather than another?
Why might a politician opt for this particular phrasing in a speech at this particular time in history?
Enthusiasm generates results much more quickly than obligation, I've found, so it's about finding a way to make the topic buzz for you, in whatever way that might be, to unlock understanding and hopefully a longer lasting passion that goes beyond just the exam!
