I’ve always been interested in sciences but know firsthand that interest and effort alone doesn’t always translate to solid exam performance. I studied Maths, Physics and Chemistry at A-Level (A*A*A*) and Computing and Further Maths (AA) at AS-Level. I then tutored A-Level Physics at my school during a gap year. Studying Physics at Imperial College, I went from scoring below 40% in exams at the end of my first term, to achieving Dean’s list (top 10%) in my final year, graduating with a high first. During this time I tutored Physics & Mathematics and co-founded a company looking to change how we teach STEM through mixed reality technologies - so pedagogical quality is a huge focus for myself as a tutor.
Having tutored over the last four years and co-founded a company aiming to change how we teach science subjects at university, I’ve always been interested in helping learners reach their potential. I personally struggled with the transition from GCSE to A-Level and University and understand how possessing interest in a subject doesn’t always map neatly to achieving consistently high grades.
Updated Review Post Summer 2022:
Engaging Luke to tutor J for Physics in the spring, just 8 weeks before he took his Physics A Level exam, was a great decision, especially after having had the A level years disrupted by Covid and lockdowns. Luke was very engaging and supportive and had a plan to help J build on what he'd been doing at school, to improve his understanding of the topics and to give him rigorous test-taking practice and tips. J was then able to go into the exams with real confidence and as result achieved an A, a full grade higher than what had been predicted.
My teaching methodology stems from this, aiming to uncover the key causes of the difficulties being faced by the student over the first few sessions. Establishing where this disconnect lies is crucial as usually this area is much smaller than the student initially thinks! By working on these core areas and building confidence, we can begin to focus on current topics to secure specific knowledge and build familiarity with common methods and techniques. The final step is locking in the rewards of this work through practicing exam questions, and tuning responses to mark schemes to reduce anxiety over the exam season by consistently achieving high marks.
This teaching method allows students to clearly see the context of the content they are learning, building confidence as this translates into higher and more consistent grades, and a more assured understanding of the subject as a whole. Whether you’re currently struggling with grades and want to turn things around in the new year but don’t know where to start, or are looking to challenge yourself, my teaching methods can help you to realise your goals.
