My name is Lucy and I am an experienced and qualified teacher of English. I am passionate about my subject and am able to convey my enthusiasm to my students through dynamic approches to teaching.
I have previously taught English in a successful Girls' Grammar School and I enjoyed motivating my students to succeed as well finding a way to interest and inspire those who found the subject more challenging.
I ran a creative writing and a comedy improvisiation club at school to encourage students to enjoy the power and possibilities of the English language and I most recently worked as the Drama Education Officer at The Point Theatre. I currently teach a Btec programme alongside my tutoring schedule, whilst working in education and theatre projects. I am also an emerging theatre director.
Outside of work I enjoy theatre, comedy and musicals as well as crochet and baking.
I completed English Literature at A-level and then went on to gain a 2:1 Hons degree in English. I completed my PGCE with MA credits in 2010 and went on to my first position, teaching in a Girls' Grammar School.
I have spent 3 years teaching from year 7 to year 13, including GCSE English Language and Literature and AS and A2 English at A-level. I have subsequently worked in Primary schools and in further education in supply and education consultancy work.
I have taught very challenging and diverse schemes of work at Key stage three, taking pride in preparing younger students for the challenges of GCSE whilst still maintaining a engaging and energetic approach to the subject.
I am proud of my track record in helping students to achieve their potential at GCSE, allowing them to access the next step in their education.
I have gone on to use creative approaches to teaching through drama in my education role at a theatre, whilst continuing to tutor and do sustained project work in schools.
I pride myself on building a strong rapport with all my students and I strongly believe that the key to this is a level of compassion paired with motivation and encouragement.
I like to keep pace and momentum in my teaching to prevent students becoming disengaged and I like to monitor and discuss progress with each pupil and their parent/s in order to tailor my teaching to their individual needs.
I am approachable, flexible and friendly whilst possessing the academic rigor which is so crucial to the role of tutor.
I have worked with tutees in preparation for GCSE and A-Level as well as a year 9 student who wanted to build confidence and enjoyment of the subject.
