Mature lady (50s), with own family, so I am experienced with exam pressures not only academically but on a personal level with my own children. I have been teaching for 17 years.
I have top academic qualifications in my discipline.
Although I presently teach Philosophy and Ethics (OCR), I have experience with 11-plus tuition, entrance exams independent schools, English Literature AS Level (AQA), Philosophy (AQA, for whom I am an examiner) and also I teach Critical Thinking AS (OCR). My last three students all achieved As in philosophy; going on to Royal Holloway, York and Lancaster universities.
I have tutored online by Skype for three years now and - a pleasant surprise! - have found it be highly effective as a teaching/learning environment. Time is also used more effectively as it cuts out all the travel costs, and setting-up of materials etc involved in home tuition. Making myself available by email every day is an enormous help to students, as they can run study problems by me, questions etc that may have come up in school that day. I do set a degree of homework (to fit in with what the individual student can cope with alongside school work) and, although I tend to teach in a disciplined fashion with a view to extracting the utmost potential from a student, I am intuitive and work with the individual attitudes and characteristics and learning style of the particular learner.
I can supply phone numbers / email addresses of several tutees if you would like references.
I enjoy teaching and, as the student engages, watching him/her develop his/her confidence in dealing with critical thinking issues, mostly by acquiring a more disciplined attitude to study, which, in turn, brings its own rewards. I also have a sense of humour!
