Liza

Buckfastleigh Tutor

I am Liza, 31 years old, originally from the Netherlands where I studied and worked as a child psychologist. I have worked a lot with children diagnosed with AD(H)D, but also with other challenges, and love working with both young and older children (including grown up children!). I have also taught 'developmental psychology' to University students and worked as a mindfulness trainer, both with children and adults.

The past three years I have studied to become a Tai Chi teacher, which I have now graduated from and naturally I incorporate Taoist/ holistic principles into my daily life. I am a patient and caring person, easy to be around, and I believe I can be of an amazing help to people of all ages to help them find back their motivation and passion in learning, and living.

I also play the piano since a very young age and have reached a point now where I can play naturally by improvising. Piano, as well as poetry, Tai Chi, being in nature, and cooking are some of the things I love doing!

Tutoring Experience

I have worked individually with children with special needs in my work as a child psychologist, and before that also in a school for children with special needs in the Netherlands. I have taught groups of University students in the subject of Developmental psychology and I have worked a lot with groups of adults and teenagers in giving them mindfulness training (stress reduction training). I have experience in teaching piano to beginners and intermediates, with a speciality in helping people to improvise.

I have experience in private tutoring (1-1) in Maths, Geography, Reading and Psychology. I am open to explore other subjects as well, depending on the level of the tutee and my skill in that. Most of all I believe my strength lies in combining my passion and experience of working with children (with and without special needs), with my enthusiasm, patience and encouragement, all in a light and fun way.

Tutoring Approach

Listening comes before doing; tuning into where the child or adult is in it's development and build from there by taking small steps, appreciating and believing in the individual qualities of every person. You will hear me saying regularly 'well done!' and finding creative ways to keep someone's attention and make learning a pleasurable, fun experience.
