I am a History PhD student at Royal Holloway, University of London. I submitted this year and am pre-viva. I have my bachelors degree in Classical Studies and Drama, and an MA in Modern History. I have studied primarily German, American and English history, but have interests in many areas. I am friendly, very patient and dedicated to helping students improve. I love studying, theatre, reading and arts and crafts.

Tutoring Experience

I have three years experience teaching on undergraduate courses at Royal Holloway. This involved designing and researching my own seminars, delivering them three times a week, providing interesting and useful source material, marking essays and holding a weekly office hour to help with essay and exam preparation.
I have also been running feedback sessions and essay clinics for the department, and have been working hard to help students improve their writing at university level.

I have worked, throughout my PhD, as a self-employed tutor for ages 4-18, working with between 1-4 children a week. I planned and executed the lessons, set and marked extra work and prepared tests to measure their progress. I tutored history, English, entrance exam prep and essay skills.
 
I also taught verbal/non-verbal reasoning in two schools in West London; St Philip’s, a boy’s school in Gloucester Road, and Our Lady of Victories Primary, also in Gloucester Road. For two years I prepared the lessons, taught to classes of between 7- 18 pupils and devised methods of measuring progress to equip students with the necessary practice and skills for competitive London entrance exams.
 
I have worked with the Brilliant Club as a PhD tutor since the start of my PhD in September 2013. I have completed nine placements with them. I have taught three courses, Mummy was a Suffragette: What Changed for Women, 1900-1980 and The Female Experience; What Changed for Women 1940-1980, which I designed, researched and created myself. I also taught a course designed by the Brilliant Club, entitled Turning Points in English History.
 
A Brilliant Club placement consisted of four stages. The first was designing and creating a course based on my own PhD research. My placement school would then attend a university style tutorial in an actual university, which I led.  I then scheduled and taught four tutorials in the placement school (four hours a week, for four weeks.) The final stage was setting an essay of my choice, between 1,500-2, 500 words long, and then marking these essays during a final week. This meant 24 essays per term. I have also achieved Advanced Skills status, as I have taught at three key stages (KS3/KS4/KS5). The purpose of these courses was to foster university aspirations and confidence.

Tutoring Approach

I can work in a number of ways. I help some of my students improve by helping with specific homework or a specific exam. I can also provide support for a course by providing extra help and setting separate homework or tasks which will work alongside schoolwork. With younger children I use stickers and games to aid motivation, with older children I ask them to identify where they need help and provide reassurance that we can improve it together.
