My name is Lindsay, I'm a male teacher age 61 living in Southsea. I have been happily married for 40 years, with two grown up children and lovely grandchildren. Retiring from an electronics engineering job in 1999, I became a teacher of mathematical subjects at South Downs FE College, Portsmouth, fully qualifying as a teacher in July 2003.
I enjoy teaching in further education and I want to help children, or adults alike, to believe that mathematics is not just about passing an exam but when faced with a question you don’t fully understand, you have the knowledge to apply different methods to help solve the problem. And that’s the same when faced with one of those 5 mark GCSE maths questions that is often left alone and could make the difference.
My whole engineering career has involved teaching and assessing. As an operations officer for controlling geostationary communication satellites, my duties also included training officer, responsible for on-job training of new and established staff to ensure safe and correct procedures are carried out.
Within Further Education, I have taught HNC students and Level 3 engineering students mathematics, electronics and mechanical principles; A level electronics and level 3 mathematical studies. I have now decided to concentrate teaching only GCSE mathematics as my primary role.
When choosing to be tutored at home it means the student is keen to work hard to succeed, and they have the backing of their family. It is therefore important that any communication with the school is to be encouraged so an area of mathematics may be the focus for attention leading up to a school assessment.
School mathematics homework should be attempted before the private lesson to identify any guidance needed from the home tutor. Additional homework from the home tutor is essential and this can be communicated electronically, freeing up the home lesson for learning.
