A Cambridge Maths graduate, I retrained as a Secondary school teacher when my youngest child went to school. After working in a variety of State schools, latterly as Head of Department in the large local comprehensive, I stopped teaching in December 2009 and have since been working as a private tutor.
I taught for 15 years in the secondary sector, across the board from Year 7 to Year 13 and all abilities. I am comfortable with all aspects of A level maths including Decision, Mechanics, Statistics and Further Maths. Having recently taught within the current system I am aware of what examiners look for in student answers, and how the question papers will be designed, and the pitfalls they contain.
Students come to you for a number of reasons - the most frequent ones being a lack of confidence, and a need for a particular examination result. The first can be helped with a relaxed approach, finding out exactly where the misconceptions are, helping the student see the clues which will allow them to categorise the problem and then solve it. The second can be addressed by understanding how the exams are designed and hence the areas on which one should concentrate for the optimum effect. I enjoy my contact with the tutees, and would hope that they feel the same in reverse.
