This is how 2 referees rated Tsz:
I am a qualified maths teacher in a secondary school in Southampton. Therefore, I am familiar with the new national maths curriculum. I was an engineer and changed my career to become a teacher because I enjoy working with kids. I have got Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in the University of Southampton.
Before I become a maths teacher, I worked as a maths tutor offering one-to-one support and group intervention in a secondary school. I have two years' teaching experience in secondary school and Sixth Form College in Southampton.
My philosophy is to focus more on conceptual knowledge than procedural knowledge. In other words, I always start to teach understanding before moving on to mathematical procedures to answer questions.
In my lesson plan, I use David Kolbs Experiential Learning Model (ELM) which breaks down the learning process using a 4-step model. It encourages the pupils to solve problems themselves under the guidance of the tutor. As a result, they will have a long-term memory because they understand it and find the solutions themselves.
I use the model of Blooms Taxonomy to improve pupils' thinking skill also. It helps pupils have a full understanding of mathematical concepts instead of memorising lots of procedures to answer questions.
In order to consolidate the understanding, I would use past papers to let pupils be familiar with different question formats. As a teacher, it is very important to teach pupils exam techniques in order to maximum the marks they can get in the exam.
