Maths and English Lessons in Menai Bridge

I was born and raised on Anglesey and spent my school years both here and in Surrey where I studied for my A Levels in English Literature, French and History. After finishing school I moved to London to study at UCL for my degree in Russian and History, during which time I lived and studied in Russia for a year. After I graduated I worked in International Development for a large charity for a couple of years before embarking on my teaching career. Having taught for six years, I am taking a step back from classroom teaching to focus my energies on what I love best: tutoring and supporting children one to one to help them reach their full potential. I love the creative arts and in particular photography, music and literature. I also love languages and have studied Russian and French. In my spare time I enjoy going for walks, doing yoga and practising aromatherapy.

Tutoring Experience

Treffos School, Anglesey: Sept 2017 - July 2018

I worked in a job share role teaching a year 5/6 class. As part of my role I also taught Welsh to infants, juniors and uppers and ran an after school Welsh club.

Hyde Park School, London: Sept 2014 – Sept 2017

I was a Form 3 Class Teacher and PSHME Coordinator at Hyde Park School. Within a few months I was given the role of Child Protection Officer. I was then promoted to Head of English and oversaw the teaching and learning of literacy across the school. The role involved a range of duties including: chairing departmental meetings; researching and implementing new schemes of work; training staff; and writing curriculum documents. I performed these duties alongside my day-to-day role as Form Teacher, which involved teaching a full weekly timetable to a mixed year 4 class.

Llandrillo-yn-Rhos School, Wales: Sept 2012 – Sept 2014

My role involved teaching music across Key Stage 2 and running the junior school choir. Under my tutelage our school choir came third place in the National Choral Festival of North Wales. Alongside teaching music I was the Year 3 Class Teacher and taught all subjects on the National Curriculum. I was also responsible for overseeing our gifted children by planning and delivering mathematical problem solving and creative writing sessions.

Current: I have experience teaching all subjects on the national curriculum as well as 11+ examinations. I am experienced in differentiating and assessing a wide range of abilities and needs. Having been Head of English for the past two years, my specialism and passion is English. In this role I led literacy initiatives that made a huge impact on the children's reading and writing levels. Under my tutelage, children have passed ISEB 11+ exams with excellent results and have more importantly grown in confidence and independence. Before this I was Head of Music in a large preparatory school in North Wales.

Tutoring Approach

My main vision for tutoring entails giving children a real sense of the creative process involved in the act of learning, as well as the skills needed to progress and develop into well rounded, confident individuals. I have seen first hand what a positive difference a tutor can make to a child’s confidence and attitude towards learning. With some additional support outside of the classroom environment, children can become more open and receptive towards learning and begin to enjoy undertaking new challenges. Seeing children flourish and reach their potential is what initially brought me to teaching and it is what keeps me teaching today. I have long had a passion for the creative arts and feel that their input offers so much opportunity for children to express themselves and develop key social and communication skills; I try where possible to teach with an artistic approach in my tutoring sessions to engage and inspire my students. Teaching my students to be reflective, independent learners is an important part of my role as a tutor as I believe it instills self-confidence and ultimately leads to success.
