Hi I'm Lauren, motivated, friendly and hard working professional with six years teaching experience. I graduated from Swansea University in 2010 with a First Class Honours degree in BA History and was awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Education the following year. I fell in love with History in primary school during a lesson on the Tudors and have been fascinated by the past ever since.
I like to develop my subject knowledge in my spare time by reading historical novels and biographies, as well as visiting historical buildings and sites. I have been very lucky to visit places such as the German Reichstag, Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, The Palace of Versailles, the Vatican, Ellis Island, the Coliseum and most recently the Lincoln memorial over looking the steps where Martin Luther King delivered his 'I have a dream' speech.
Prior to moving into education, I worked as a care assistant in a local care home elderly residents suffering from dementia. Working in a care setting helped me to appreciate the importance of Young Carers within our schools which led me to establish a Young Carers Support Group for some of my pupils. The aim of this group is to offer advice, support and to share my own experiences with pupils. My classroom is also used as a quiet study area for those who find completing home learning tasks and revision difficult outside of school hours, for obvious reasons.
During the past six years I have been provided with excellent opportunities which include teaching History to a range of students of all years at Key Stage 3, through to GCSE as well as Key Stage 5. . Having achieved a First Class Honours in BA History, I feel that my outstanding subject knowledge means that I am fully qualified to ensure my pupils achieve all that they are capable of and this is evidenced by my record of high examination performance. My most recent Year 10 classes achieved a 72% pass rate for grades A* to C, with 43% of students achieving an A or A* in one of their exams. My role as an examiner for the WJEC exam board has developed my own knowledge of exam technique and what is expected from pupils which means my pupils are very well prepared.
I also have experience of teaching Government and Politics at A-level and have experience working in an AEN department teaching Literacy and numeracy to pupils with additional learning needs. I possess exemplary organisation, planning and administrative skills which allows me to manage a demanding workload with confidence. I value my position as a positive role model by making worthwhile contributions within the school community; my commitment and dedication has been acknowledged by my senior management team by gaining two promotions in two years. The first to Literacy Co-coordinator across the Curriculum and most recently to Head of Year 7.
I believe that my pupils should be given opportunities to learn through real and meaningful first hand experiences that are relevant to their interests and individual needs. My priority is to build strong relationships with my pupils by taking time to talk to them, discover what interests them and then use this information to help them in their learning by making lessons relevant and purposeful.
Overall, my approach to teaching and learning is to ensure that lessons are varied and engaging; enthusing students with a love for History while fostering a positive and safe learning experience. Furthermore, it is vital as a tutor to provide high quality learning opportunities for my pupils. Through carefully planned lessons, with clear learning intentions and outcomes, I aim to ensure that all pupils achieve their full potential. Under my leadership, students are able to foster the confidence to learn from their mistakes and develop into learners who use carefully structured feedback to progress in their learning with increasing independence.
