Personal Description:

My name is Laura and I'm an experienced Academic Support Tutor, Qualitative Researcher and Lecturer. My specialism is Deaf Studies and Social Science, but I have worked in a variety of academic, research and support roles in both further and higher education.

I recently completed a Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Prior to that, in 2013 I was awarded a PhD in Applied Social Science from Lancaster University; my qualitative research explored the lived experiences of young adult cochlear implant users. I have a first class degree in Deaf Studies, from the University of Central Lancashire, and a level 2 certificate in British Sign Language. I also am certified to teach students in higher education settings.

Tutoring Experience:

Since 2006 I have been working as a Language Support Tutor with d/Deaf Students in higher education. I work with students on a 1:1 basis and provide support with their academic work. We work together to develop the student's English grammar, extend their academic vocabulary and improve their study skills. I also support students towards developing active research skills and using appropriate referencing styles.

I provide on-line tutoring for students on a range of degree courses. All tutoring is tailored to meet individual needs, so the sessions might focus on study skills, verbalising the subject content, or developing the client's academic writing skills.

I have experience of tutoring young adults on English Literature/Language GCSE courses. This role often involves developing the student's confidence in their written language skills and furthering their understanding of specific literature texts.

In addition, I am experienced at lecturing on topics relating to qualitative research and study skills, deafness and cochlear implants. I have delivered conference papers (locally and internationally), guest lectures and facilitated seminars.

Tutoring Approach:

I offer a bespoke tutoring service which is tailored to meet individual needs. I incorporate a range of learning styles, and will work with the student to identify and achieve their learning goals.

I am flexible about how best to tutor each student and will discuss their requirements during the first session. For example, I might support the student with specific assignment tasks, undertaking research, academic referencing, organising ideas and developing essay plans, or developing proofreading skills.

I encourage students to develop confidence in their study skills and written work. The ultimate goal is that my tutoring and support will enable the student to become a confident and independent learner.
