This is how 2 referees rated Laura:
My ambition in life has always been to teach and I feel incredibly lucky that this dream has become a reality, I am now in my 9th year of my teaching career.
I am an active member of both the Natural History Society of Northumbria and the Northumberland Wildlife Trust. I love to travel and have recently visited Ecuador, the Galapagos islands and Vietnam. I take the chance to scuba dive where I can and have taken part in several wildlife tours.
I am a kind, approachable and easy to talk to person always willing to go above and beyond to help my students.
I have a large amount of experience in teaching students of all ages and abilities. Currently, I hold the position of head of psychology and teacher of science at a small, local independent school. Prior to this, I taught science and biology at a very large, high achieving state school in Gosforth. I am also an examiner of A-level Biology, with 3 years experience of marking candidate scripts and preparing assessment materials for the examination boards. I find that this examining experience has given me a valuable insight which can be utilised when preparing candidates to sit these A-level Biology papers.
I started my teaching career by achieving Qualified Teacher Status through the secondary Post-Graduate Certificate in Education course (PGCE Masters level) at the University of York, specialising in biology. This course involved a two week teaching placement at a local primary school, a 4 week placement at a secondary school and a long 16 week placement at a further secondary school in Scarborough. My final grading of my teaching practice was given as the highest possible 'outstanding' rating using OFSTED guidelines. Prior to attending the PGCE course, I graduated from BSc Psychology degree with Honours also at York University.
More recently, I have completed a Masters in education where I completed a comparative study of student learning. I graduated from this MEd programme in June 2017 with grade distinction. I am now a part time doctoral student and am hoping to specialise in the role of education in international development and would like to complete a cross-cultural comparative study as my doctoral thesis.
Every pupil has a different learning style and I aim to be flexible in my approach to tutoring. Whether your needs are to gain more C passes at GCSE or a retake at A-level in order to achieve top grades to gain a place at university, often the support of another person reassuring you that you are on the right path and succeeding can create a large increase in confidence.
Before commencing a tutoring programme, I commit to finding the right approach for you to support your needs in the best possible way. I do this by discussing needs and preferences with new tutees before planning the course, to find out what you intend to achieve by undertaking this tutoring.
If you have any questions about my suitability or availability please do not hesitate to contact me through FirstTutors. CRB, QTS, references and qualifcations documentation can be provided on request.
