Personal Description:

I am a 40 something year old Mum of one great little boy of nearly 8 years old. I love reading and encourage all my students to read as widely as they possibly can. I am a self confessed 'Cat-Lady' and a massive Beatles fan, to the extent that my husband and I got married last year in Liverpool in a Beatles themed hotel. You will find plenty of Beatles memorabilia displayed throughout my house, though I reserve my office wall space for more educational displays…

Tutoring Experience:

I taught in schools for 15 years but started to feel that I was spending more and more of my career involved in non teaching activities, about which I grew increasingly frustrated. I left in 2015 and since then have been self employed, tutoring through my own business LJH Tutoring. I have been Head of Psychology and Sociology at several local schools, including a very highly performing local grammar school; and teacher of Psychology, English, RE and Sociology in other schools throughout my career.

I have several years experience tutoring home educated children and have many friends within the local home ed community. I offer tuition during the day for home ed students in all of my subjects.

I offer online sessions via Skype and currently have students in Birmingham, Southampton and Switzerland!

Tutoring Approach:

I tutor from my home where i have a dedicated office space with a large desk and a large collection of resources. I encourage parents to sit in for the first session or two until they and the child feel comfortable. Then I ask the parent to sign a form stating that they are happy for me to tutor their child in their absence and that they have seen my documentation. Parents are then free to come and go as they please, safe in the knowledge that their child is happy, safe and learning in a friendly relaxed home environment. If parents prefer to wait, there is a small seating area in the hallway of my home with a selection of magazines etc and of course, parents can sign into my wifi!
I like to make my students feel at home, and prefer to veer away from a traditional school atmosphere. I will offer drinks/ biscuits if parents are happy for me to and we will always start sessions with a quick informal chat about their week, what they have been doing/ reading/ heard on the news etc.
Initially, I assess my students abilities in whichever subject area I am tutoring them. We then chat together about outcomes parents and student are seeking from tutoring and I formulate a plan which I share.
Each student is an individual person and deserves an individual approach to their learning.
