I'm an experienced tutor of English Literature, English Language and Creative Writing based in South East London.
As well as being a tutor, I work as a freelance director and writer of opera and theatre, putting into practice the academic and creative skills I learned through my own education. I know only too well how important these skills can be, and I am passionate about teaching others, to get the very best out of them and help them achieve their goals.
I hold First Class Honours in English Literature from Newcastle University, having graduated with the top marks in my year, following achievements of all As at A-Level (English Literature, Classical Civilisation and Music) and at AS (French and General Studies), as well as 7 A*s and 3 As at GCSE. I am also a published poet, and have run many creative writing events and workshops.
I give lessons from my own flat as well as at pupils' homes. I'm happy to travel, within reason (please note travel outside of Zones 1-3 may incur a small additional cost for time and expense). Please don't hesitate to enquire, whatever your location.
Sessions via **Contact Detail Removed**, sessions lasting over 1.5 hours, or sessions for 2+ pupils, may be discounted - please contact me for details.
I have been teaching for eight years, and have experience of working one-to-one, in small groups and in classrooms. My students are of all ages and abilities, and I am confident adapting my skills to each pupil's individual requirements.
I can offer specialised support for exam preparation and revision strategy, essay-writing skills, writing professional documents, and more. I am also happy to offer intensive top-up or revision sessions on a short-term basis for pupils ahead of exams.
My strengths as a teacher include confidence-building, finding creative ways of approaching a subject, and working to pupils' own strengths and abilities. I aim to empower a student to fuel their own learning and really enjoy a subject as well as excelling in it. I work to foster an open environment in which a student has the confidence to try ideas and ask questions without fear of judgement.
A study of literature can inspire, but can also intimidate students when there is no 'right answer'. However, exam boards' requirements are clear, and I am confident in enabling a student to work clearly towards these whilst gaining an in-depth appreciation of the material they are studying.
- I offer a no-obligation first hour-long lesson (priced as standard), preceded by a phone call to the student or parent/guardian (as appropriate) to enable me to prepare for this session. Questions I may ask will include details of exam boards, texts or pupils' specific requirements and aspirations.
- This first lesson will include an informal assessment of a student's needs, and - where appropriate - a brief follow-up consultation with a parent/guardian to outline my ideas for approaching ongoing support. At this point ongoing lessons can be arranged, if the student is happy.
- I have a strict 24-hour cancellation policy, which applies both to students and to myself.
