Personal Description:

I can talk to anyone. It worried my Nan - I suppose it would, especially when she realised that when I was only two years old! She became impressed when she learned that I could find out a person's life history in just five minutes flat!
The question is: does that make me approachable or just downright nosey?!

Tutoring Experience:

I have taught a wide range of students in challenging secondary schools in the seven years since I qualified as a teacher. In that time I have also mentored Newly Qualified Teachers, become the assistant head of English and successfully provided private tuition for GCSEs, Year 6 SATS, Entrance exams, and A level Business studies; English Literature and Language; Media Studies. More recently, I have been helping to prepare a 4 year old in the transition to school.
Prior to my Qualified Teacher Status, I have been lucky enough to get experience at a pre-school nursery; with small intervention groups in primary schools; students with Special Education Needs and Individual Learning Plans; and at informal play-schemes and after school clubs.

Tutoring Approach:

I use a lot of humour, discussion and anecdotes as I strongly believe that the ability to converse confidently has a positive effect on a student's understanding of the written word.
I think it is imperative that students can understand why their learning is relevant to them. A student's interests, lifetime plans and real life scenarios are fundamental in this approach.
Every decision made is centred around the student. Each lesson is individually planned and prepared for the individual student. It could focus on an identified area of weakness or build upon the student's strengths. Sometimes, lessons may need to suddenly take a new direction but that is always for the benefit to the student.
