Personal Description:

** I am currently abroad and won't be back until early July. I will only be able to give online lessons until then. Apologies!**

After graduating with an MSci in Natural Sciences in 2016, I managed to secure work as a research and clerical assistant in the department I had been studying in. However, I soon felt like much of the knowledge that I had worked so hard to obtain during my degree was getting rusty and I risked losing it. I had done odd tutoring jobs since I was at sixth form, and wondered whether tutoring alongside my main job might both a) help me keep my finger on the pulse of scientific subjects and b) supplement my income and allow me to save for future travel. I advertised on multiple websites and soon found myself with a diverse handful of students, ranging in age from 5 to 70, across all levels of maths and science, as well as obtaining three violin students. I was surprised at how satisfying and engaging this work was, and how each student had nuanced characteristics that altered how they best learned. I began thinking very deeply about how to connect with each person, monitoring their affinity to various teaching techniques. One year after starting private tutoring, I felt that I had developed my confidence and skills in teaching to a point where I wanted to focus on it solely for at least a year, and combine it with my desire to travel. So, since September 2017 I have been living in Florence working as an au pair and English/Music teacher.
This has been a wonderful experience and, consequently, I am extremely keen to continue teaching when I return back to the UK in September 2018. I will be starting a main job as a graduate manager for a private healthcare company, but also hold an offer to start a Graduate Entry Medical Degree at Imperial College London in September 2019. However alongside both of these I want to continue teaching as it has enabled me to genuinely help other people to reach their potential, and has allowed me to develop important new abilities as an educator. I am looking to start new tutoring jobs as soon as possible, firstly online until I move back to the UK, and then face-to-face in the Richmond/Surrey area thereafter.

Tutoring Experience:

From September 2016-2017 I privately tutored 14 people, each for at least 6 months of the year, with a few additional one-off lessons to individuals wanting short-term help. These included: 1 x A Level Maths student (C1, C2, C3, C4, S1, S2 modules), 1 x IB Biology and Chemistry student, 4 x Maths students on GCSE level material (years 9 - 11), 2 x KS2 maths students (ages 7 and 11), 2 x KS1 maths students (age 5), 3 x violin students (ages 7, 27 and 70, grades 1, 3 and 5 respectively), 1 x UCAS application and interview advice student (3 hours).
From my records, I taught 136 hours in total.

From September 2017 to the present I have been an au pair in Florence, teaching English to two children (ages 2 and 10), as well as violin to the older child (grade 2). My total number of hours dedicated to lessons, so far, is 45 hours.

So, my total experience of teaching is around 180 hours, across Maths, Science, English and Music.

Tutoring Approach:

I try to listen to my pupils as much as possible to begin with so I can gage what they enjoy and what they are struggling with the most. I then try to balance these things so that no one gets frustrated and there is always an element of satisfaction in a lesson. I think it is important to be working on the edge of each pupil's comfort zone so that they progress, but never feel overwhelmed by the tasks at hand. This helps gradual learning and progression. I treat each pupil as my equal, to give a sense that we are team getting through their work together. However, each person is different, and if I sense that a pupil needs to have a more separate teacher-student relationship I can accommodate for this too - I just prefer the more friendly approach.
