I am a qualified maths teacher with over 25 years experience of working in education in a variety of school and college settings. I have recently moved to Kent from London after taking early retirement from a senior management post in student support. I now combine maths tutoring with volunteering and am also training to become a counsellor.
I started my career as a secondary maths teacher and later specialised in the sixth form age range teaching maths at a range of levels from basic numeracy to A-level before moving into college management. The bulk of my experience is with students re-sitting their maths GCSE. I have also taught philosophy and critical thinking at AS and A level. I began private tutoring in September 2016. Before that I spent a year supporting maths and numeracy classes at a further education college. This updated my curriculum knowledge and gave me the opportunity to work 1-1 with students who have additional needs, supporting them to improve their maths.
From working with young people resitting their maths I appreciate that the subject can be a turn-off for many. Working 1-1 with a positive and encouraging tutor gives learners the space to work at the pace and in the style that suits them best. This way, they can fill the gaps in their knowledge and build the confidence to master new areas of maths.
