Ayr Tutor

I have been tutoring for over 15 years now, and have enjoyed seeing the difference my support has helped create. My tutees have again and again been successful in improving their grades and understanding of the subject.

But more importantly I believe in the power that confidence gives, and firmly believe in building individual pupil confidence, wherein the pupil themselves achieve.

I enjoy tutoring in small groups or one to one and also enjoy the relationship that builds with them family themselves. A friendly and professional relationship helps greatly in improving learning and understanding.

I have excellent communication skills and take each tutee on an individual basis. All tutees are different and have different learning skills, preferences and goals, and this what I enjoy about the work, and the feedback I've received here has always been consistently positive.

My formal education has been in Scotland, including my undergraduate at Glasgow University (MPhil) in Scottish and English Literature and Language, my Masters in Scottish Studies and History, from the University of Glasgow. My PGCE qualification is from Strathclyde. I have also worked abroad in the US, as a summer camp tutor in drama.

I am an enthusiastic and motivated Tutor, and a trained English Teacher with a PGCE from Strathclyde University. I have a working knowledge of the new curriculum for excellence and qualifications.

I very much enjoy tutoring and am always moved by seeing the difference the support I provide makes. I have a high success rate and the majority of my pupils reach their desired achievement goal. As a testament to this, much of my pupil business is referral based.

Tutoring Experience

I am a fully qualified secondary English teacher, and I have been tutoring English one to one for over 15 years. I have been drama tutoring for longer, with my own theatre company, which itself has strong ties with education (workshops) and teacher training (using Drama as a tool to educate).

I have worked, over the years, with primary students (primary 5 and upwards), improving reading and writing skills, as well as exploring different kinds of texts, text purpose and audience. I have many lower secondary school students, and have on going experience in helping build confidence and improve performance and achievement in reading, writing, talking, understanding, analysis and evolution.

Many of my tutees are National 4 and 5 level, and I have a great deal of experience in the curriculum: discursive and persuasive writing, creative writing, speaking, presentations, analysis and evaluation.

In regards to Higher level, this is where I have the majority of tutees, from those who struggle with the material and those who achieve well but want to achieve an even higher grade.

I have enjoyed working with adult tutees in many areas of Further Education, form nursing to Agriculture, to Engineering.

Also, I have experience in distance learning tutoring both with young adults and adults, as well as English as a Second Language.

I am up to date and involved in the curriculum and new teaching strategies; I am fully disclosed.

Tutoring Approach

My approach is friendly, motivating and always supportive, as well as honest. I am also achievement driven if the pupil desires it, as this is what motivates many pupils.

I use a number of strategies, depending on the needs of the tutee, their confidence, learning styles and preferences. I work with existing material being used in the tutee's class as well as supplementary lessons. This always varies, and indeed I enjoy the variety.

Feedback is ongoing as is discussions with tutee and family, as desired.

Revision and exam technique are a central part of what I do many times, as English is often a difficult subject to revise for. Strategies and techniques are applied, and I have a variety of approaches, from essay question awareness, to marking scheme analysis, even the creation of your own R U A E (close reading) and marking scheme in order to see it from the perspective of a marker.

I cover the English curriculum for excellence:
Critical Essay writing - structure, analysis and evaluation, expression and vocabulary.
Personal and creative essay writing - imagery, structure, characterisation, expression.
Textual Analysis - Evaluation and analysis, flexible formulas for exam practice.
Reading for U A E - Language analysis and evaluation (how techniques are used and what the effect is).
Discursive and persuasive writing, appropriate language, research skills, structure.
Exam revision - organisation and practice skills.

I am here to help you achieve the very best you can achieve.
